With the help of Bloomberg and our generous Deckchair Artists, that dream became a reality and the Royal Parks Foundation celebrated the arrival of summer 2006 with a collection of specially commissioned deckchairs, created by celebrities from the worlds of art and drama, illustration, cartoon, fashion design and taxidermy.
Alongside these visionary artists we also invited a number of primary school children, plus a team of 12 new recruits to the Household Cavalry, to get involved. Nearly 200 pupils, aged 5-15, came from different schools to study art and nature in their local Royal Park. Their designs were judged and each year the winners were rolled out alongside the "celebrity" chairs, for everyone to enjoy between June and October.
Deckchair Dreams has transformed the traditional landscape of London's Royal Parks whilst raising vital funds for special Park projects, and education activities in particular. We have raised more than £200,000 to date, supplemented with additional funds from the sale of tote bags made from the recycled slings.
