About Celia Birtwell

Well-known for her romantic textiles and vibrant range of pattern inspired from the natural world, Celia Birtwell is and was one of the most important textiles designers of her generation. She was particularly influential in the 60’s and 70’s when, working with her then husband, fashion designer Ossie Clark, they were the toast of the fashion industry and dressed everyone from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, Paloma Picasso and Twiggy.

Birtwell has been running her own fabric shop in Notting Hill since 1984, and supplies hotels such as Claridges and The Lanesbourough Hotels in London. She has recently designed a collection for the high street chain Topshop. She has been a muse for the painter, David Hockney since 1968, and features in his 1970 painting ‘Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy’, one of Hockney’s most celebrated paintings in the Tate Britain gallery.
