About Philip Treacy

Philip Treacy was born in 1966 in a tiny village called Ahascragh in County Galway, in the West of Ireland. He started sewing when he was about five, making dresses and hats for his sister’s dolls. In 1985 he moved to Dublin to study fashion at the National College of Art & Design, and three years later he won a place on the MA fashion design course at the Royal College of Art in London from where he graduated with first class honours.

Following his academic career, 1989 saw his move into the fashion world following a meeting with Tatler’s style editor, Isabella Blow which resulted in designing hats for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel over the next ten years. As a highly acclaimed designer, he has won many an award including five British Designer of the Year, the Moet & Chandon award for luxury, International Designer of the Year in 2004 at the China Fashion Awards in Shanghai and an OBE in 2007 in recognition of his services to the British Fashion industry.

Philip’s works are exhibited and sold all over the globe and his hats have been worn by and at many of the world’s most recognised supermodels and events; Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, Kate Moss and the wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles to name a few. Philip is now taking his aesthetic into other disciplines, using his sculptural forms as a medium for other objects, such as glassware and furniture.

Deckchair Design

Philip Treacy donated a deckchair design to Deckchair Dreams in 2010. Philip says his inspiration for the design was:

The Royal Parks of London are the most beautiful in the world, so it is fitting to have the most beautiful women in the world in these parks as part of Deckchair Dreams.  Philip Treacy Deckchair
