1. Brompton Cemetery is one of Britain's oldest and most distinguished garden cemeteries.

2. The cemetery is Grade I Listed on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and covers 39-acres.

3. 35,000 monuments, from simple headstones to mortuary chapels, mark some 205,000 burials.

4. Of these monuments, 28 are Grade II Listed, and one — the Leyland tomb by Edward Burne-Jones – is Grade II*.

5. It’s an important visitor destination that is loved by locals as well as visitors to the city.

6. There are 50 prominent and important personalities in Brompton Cemetery including:

  • COLE, Sir Henry (1808-1897) Instigator of Great Exhibition & V & A Museum
  • FOWLER, Sir John (1817-1898) Engineer of Metropolitan Railway & Forth Bridge
  • GOLDING, Dr. Benjamin (1793-1863) Founder of Charing Cross Hospital
  • JACKSON, John (1769-1845) Pugilist
  • PANKHURST, Emmeline (1852-1928) Suffragette leader
  • SNOW, Dr. John (1813-1858) Pioneer anaesthetist & cholera cause discoverer
  • SOTHEBY, Samuel Leigh (1805-1868) Auctioneer

7.  Brompton Cemetery is old, 174 years old to be precise, which makes it part of our history and culture so make sure you go and visit it!
