Brompton Cemetery gets formal pledge of support
Our campaign to restore Brompton Cemetery has secured nearly £4.5million in pledged funding from the Parks for People programme by the BIG Lottery Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Brompton Cemetery is one of the oldest Grade 1 cemeteries in the country and its 39 acres of green space is home to some unique and historic monuments including its picturesque chapel, which was designed in a similar style to the setting around St Peter’s in Rome. It’s vital that we protect the future of the historic and nationally important Cemetery in the heart of London.
Among the 205,000 people buried in Brompton Cemetery are notable figures from history including suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, Queen Victoria’s surgeon Sir Thomas Spencer Wells as well as over 2,600 Chelsea Pensioners.
To unlock this pledge of support, we need to match-fundraise £500,000 from our supporters. So far we are half way there with thanks to a combination of gifts from the local community, corporate partners, trusts and foundations.
